Quick Answer: Antique copper stainless steel sheet is a 304/316L stainless base with a PVD copper-toned coating combined with brushing or etching to create a distressed, aged metal look. It comes in 0.8–2.0 mm thickness and standard 4×8 ft sizes. Unlike real copper, it does not patina or tarnish — the vintage look is locked in by the PVD layer. Used for feature walls, elevator interiors, door frames, furniture and heritage-style commercial projects.

What Is Antique Copper Stainless Steel Sheet?

Antique copper stainless steel sheet looks like aged, patinated copper or brass, but it is actually a stainless steel substrate (usually 304) with two surface treatments:

PVD coating — a physical vapor deposition layer in copper, bronze or brass tones applied in a vacuum furnace.

Mechanical texturing — hairline brushing, bead blasting, or chemical etching applied over the PVD layer to create variation in tone, mimicking the wear pattern of old metal.

The result is a surface that reads as vintage, hand-finished metal but carries all the practical advantages of stainless steel: it does not oxidize, does not need waxing, wipes clean with water, and will not develop green patina over time.

This distinction matters. Real copper cladding ages and changes; antique copper stainless steel stays exactly the same color for decades. Designers specify it when they want the look of aged copper without the maintenance.

Finishes Available: Not One "Antique Copper"

Buyers often ask for "antique copper" without realizing there are multiple tones and textures. Choosing the right one changes the entire look of the project.

Finish Tone

Color Description

Best For

Dark Antique Copper

Deep brown-bronze, near-black in shadow, warm brown in light

Classic, heritage, dark luxury interiors

Aged / Red Copper

Reddish-copper tone with mottled patina variation

Rustic, industrial, vintage bar and restaurant

Texture Options

Underneath the color, the mechanical texture changes how the light reads:

Hairline brushed — fine linear brush marks, most common, clean vintage look

Non-directional / vibration finish — random swirl pattern, no visible grain direction

Bead blasted — matte, uniform, softer reflection

Etched — chemical pattern with depth, for a more pronounced distressed effect

Water ripple + antique — embossed wave pattern with copper PVD, for feature walls

Weight Calculation

Stainless steel density: 7.93 g/cm³.

Example: A 304 antique copper sheet, 1219 × 2438 mm, 1.0 mm thick.

Weight = 1.219 m × 2.438 m × 0.001 m × 7930 kg/m³ = ≈ 23.5 kg per sheet

For a 30-sheet wall panel order: 23.5 × 30 = ≈ 705 kg (add 10% for packaging).

Rule of thumb: weight (kg) ≈ length(m) × width(m) × thickness(mm) × 7.93.

Where Antique Copper Stainless Steel Is Used

Luxury Hotel & Hospitality

Feature walls in lobbies, elevator interiors, reception desks, bar fronts. The antique copper tone reads as warm and timeless — a contrast to the cool mirror and glass common in modern hotels.

Heritage & Restoration Projects

When renovating historic buildings, antique copper stainless matches the look of original copperwork without the ongoing maintenance of real copper cladding. Often specified for shopfronts in conservation areas.

Upscale Restaurants & Bars

Back-bar panels, wine cellars, private dining room walls. The aged copper tone complements wood, leather and warm lighting — it is a signature look in steak houses, whiskey bars and cigar lounges.

Residential Luxury

Kitchen island backsplashes, TV feature walls, fireplace surrounds, closet doors. Homeowners choose it for the warm metal look without the green patina risk of real copper in a kitchen.

Furniture & Joinery

Cabinet faces, wardrobe doors, table bases, column cladding. Thicker 1.2–1.5 mm panels can take edge banding and joinery detail.

Elevator Interiors

Aged copper panels in elevator cabs create a premium arrival experience. Brushed texture hides fingerprints better than bright mirror.

Antique Copper vs. Real Copper: Which to Choose?

Factor

Antique Copper Stainless Steel

Real Copper

Color stability

Fixed, will not change

Patinas over years, turns green

Maintenance

Wipe clean with mild cleaner

Needs waxing/clear coating

Cost

Mid-range, installable like SS sheets

Higher material cost + ongoing care

Weight

Same as stainless sheet (~8 kg/m² at 1 mm)

Similar density

Repair

Replace panel, blend with new sheets

Patina mismatch on replacement

Fire / heat

Stainless substrate, stable

Real copper, also fire-safe

Best for

Interiors where the look must stay consistent

Exterior facades where patina is desired

For 90% of interior projects, antique copper stainless steel is the practical choice. Specify real copper only if you want the patina to develop over time as a design feature.

Common Mistakes When Specifying

Ordering without a sample: Antique tones vary batch to batch. The PVD copper tone on a website photo will not match your screen. Always get a physical sample in the exact texture you want.

Mixing textures on one wall: Brushed and non-directional finishes look different under the same lighting. Specify one texture across the entire project.

Using bright mirror under antique PVD: The PVD layer is thin. If you use mirror substrate, the antique effect looks flat. Use brushed or bead-blasted base for the best aged look.

Cleaning with abrasive pads: The antique texture is partly mechanical — steel wool or scouring pads will wear through the PVD layer and reveal bright stainless underneath.

Ignoring edge finish: Cut edges will show bright stainless steel. Always specify edge banding or edge grinding/matching PVD on cut edges.

Pricing, MOQ and Sourcing

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does antique copper stainless steel tarnish or change color over time?

No. The copper tone is a PVD coating in a vacuum furnace, bonded to the stainless substrate. It will not patina, oxidize or turn green like real copper. The color stays consistent for decades indoors.

Q: Can I use antique copper stainless steel in a kitchen or bathroom?

Yes, in 304 grade. The surface is non-porous and resists moisture and steam. For shower areas or humid coastal environments, use 316L. Clean with mild soap and water — avoid abrasive scouring pads that can wear through the PVD layer.

Q: What is the difference between antique copper and antique brass?

Antique copper has a red-brown tone; antique brass has a yellow-gold tone. Both are PVD-coated stainless steel with a distressed brushed texture. Copper reads warmer and deeper; brass reads brighter and more classical/art deco.

Q: Can the antique finish be applied to water ripple or other embossed patterns?

Yes. Ferosteel combines PVD antique copper coating with embossed water ripple, hammered, or etched patterns. This creates a vintage textured feature wall with more depth than a flat brushed sheet.

Q: How do I match the finish on cut edges?

Cut edges expose the bright stainless steel substrate. Specify edge banding in matching antique tone, or ask the factory to apply edge grinding and touch-up PVD on the cut edges before delivery.

Q: Is antique copper stainless steel more expensive than regular mirror stainless?

Yes, typically 40–80% more than plain 2B or mirror finish, because the PVD coating and mechanical texturing are additional processes. It is still significantly cheaper than real copper cladding plus long-term maintenance.
